Newport Carnival 10k

Life in Newport did not come to a grinding halt just because the World Cup
was taking place in Germany. Just over 160 athletes travelled to the town
to take part in the Carnival 10K race put on by the local running club as
part of the overall Carnival celebrations last Saturday.
The multi terrain race was run in extremely hot conditions and the breeze
didn't seem to help much as even that was hot!
There was a late change to the route around the 7K marker due to silage
making taking place, but it did not seem to put anyone off too much.
The race itself was won by Andrzej Sinatoinski from Rugely in 33m 20s with
Telford AC and Adams GS teacher Robin Sedman-Smith in 2nd place in 33m 42s
and John Sanders 3rd in 34m 05s.
Many of the running club were on duty on the day, but still managed to put
out 20 runners to represent the town in their race.Dan Lewis was fourth in
34m 59s with John Garmson in 8th in 36m 51s with Rachel Stoares having a
good run to finish 23rd in 41m 22s.
Special mention must go to Ian Kevan who managed to push and drag a
pushchair round the course with his passenger in the amazing time of 50m
59s to finish 81st. An amazing feat given the conditions and terrain.
Three amigos who ran in Mexican outfits consting of sombreros, ponchos and
moustaches were Paul Dain, Stephen Whiles and Mark Steventon. They
received great support throughout the race as did all the runners, many of
whom commented on the encouragement they received as they ran through the
town. Paul, Stephen and Mark were running in aid of Hope House Hospice and
should be congratulated on raising several hundred pounds for this
worthwhile cause.

Shropshire 4 Mile Race

Last wednesday, around 220 local athletes gathered at the Shropshire Golf
Complex for the third race in Telford AC's Sexarathon series. Run over a
distance of four miles, the course included two laps round Granville
Country Park and finished on the drive of the golf course.
Conditions on the night were extremely warm with little or no breeze and
some runners found this quite tough, setting off too fast and wilting
slightly in the heat in the latter stages.
Newport and District Running Club had their now usual mass turnout with 43
of the club taking part. Again the largest of any club that evening.
Chris Davies of Telford AC led the race from the off and won in a time of
20m 47s, with Paul Ward of Wrekin Road Runners 2nd in 21m 06s. A new
member of the Newport club, Dan Lewis, had a storming run to finish third
in 21m 16s and we hope to see a lot more of him in the future.John Garmson
had a good run to achieve sixteenth in 23m 04s with Noel Hogan pushing him
all the way in 18th in a time of 23m 36s.
Sympathy was with Andy Thompson who only ran around half a mile of the
race before pulling up with a calf injury, but he hopes to be able to run
in the next race in a few weeks time.
Robin Guy had no such problems and showed that he was back after missing
the last race through injury by finishing 31st in 24m 32s. Steve Tudor
produced a good run to gain 2nd in his age group and 36th place overall in
25m 01s.
Ian Kevan and Glenn MacDonald-Jones had their own personal battle within
the race with Ian just coming out the winner in 38th position in 25m 10s
and Glenn 39th just two second behind.
Another new member, Rachel Stoares, did really well to be 4th lady home in
48th position in 25m 56s, closely followed by Lindsay Ferguson in 26m 05s
to gain 52nd place. Richard Guy also had a good run in the heat to be 56th
in 26m 23s.

Newport Carnival 10k

We are pleased to announce that the Newport Carnival 10k was a huge success, with over 150 runners running. Results can be found here.
Thanks to all sponsors and helpers, without them the event would not have been possible.
