Much Wenlock Olympics Triathlon

Three members of Newport and District Running Club recently showed that their talents also stretched to two other disciplines when they participated in the Wenlock Olympian Society's Triathlon.
Although triathlon is normally regarded as a summer sport, the event took place in atrocious conditions throughout the morning which made racing quite difficult and treacherous in certain parts of the cycle ride and run.
Being a slow swimmer, Mark Deighton was first off in the pool at Bridgnorth for the 500metre swim. He managed this in 13m 22s, but once out of the water and on terra firma, he gained ground on some of those who had set off before him, overtaking several riders on the undulating 15K bike ride to Much Wenlock, arriving in 38m 59s before taking on a very slippery 6K cross country run to cross the line in 30m 52s, making a total time of 1hr 23m 13s to achieve 46th place overall. A creditable effort given the conditions.
Gary Postins did even better, polishing off the swim in 10m 42s, before attacking the bike course to arrive in Much Wenlock in 35m 12s. His good run time of 29m 27s meant that he came 20th overall in a total time of 1hr 15m 21s.
Club honours for the day went to Robin Guy who produced a fast swim time of 8m 58s, setting him up for the bike, and with the andrenalin flowing, he pushed hard all the way to Much Wenlock, arriving there in 32m 53s, before pulling out all the stops to finish the run in 26m 21s, a magnificent effort in the rain to give him a well deserved 7th place overall.
With further events to come later in the season, the future looks bright for these athletes, even if the weather doesn't.
