Much Welock Olympics

Along with great sporting occasions like the World Cup finals in Germany, the Much Wenlock Olympics took place last weekend with three members of Newport and District Running Club diversifying and taking part in the triathlon.

Starting with a 500 metre swim in the pool at Bridgnorth, competitors then had to cycle around 12 miles on the hilly back road to Much Wenlock before running 4 miles cross country to finish the event.

Gary Postins was the top placed of the Newport contingent with a reasonable swim time of 10m 19s before pushing hard on the bike to reach Much Wenlock in 36m 03s. He paid a little for this effort as he felt tired on the run, but still managed a respectable 30m 09s to complete the course in 1hr 16m 31s, finishing 5th in his category and 18th overall in a field of almost 90 competitors.

Mark Deighton had his normal slow swim of 14m 00s, but picked it up a little on the bike with a time of 39m 34s. He had saved his best effort for the run, however, with a time of 29m 30s, finishing with a total time of 1hr 23m 04s, which equated to 7th in his category and 38th place overall.

Roger Kerr had a good swim of 11m 15s which set him up for a good start, unfortunately the new bike, bought only the day before the event, suffered a few problems with the chain coming off on the course, resulting in a relatively slow time of 47m 51s for this section. Roger pushed quite hard in the run section in order to make up for this and achieved a creditable 32m 37s to finish the event in 1hr 31m 43s, which gave him 18th in age group ranking and 61st place overall.

As Roger and Mark had no support with them they then had to saddle up again and cycle back to Bridgnorth to collect their kit and cars before returning home. Not put off though, all three have entered other similar events throughout the coming season and are looking to improve their performances.
