Last Sunday, almost 650 runners descended on the beautiful surroundings of
Baggeridge Country Park near Sedgeley to take on the Suicide Sixish race.
The race is run off road and put the athletes through a test of stamina
which included hills, forest tracks, mud and even a river crossing.
The morning started of quite chilly with a frost on the ground, but things
soon warmed up as the race began and the athletes had to squeeze through a
narrow gate before running towards the first of several climbs.
John Garmson was in the leading group and pushed on throughout the race at
a good pace to cross the line in 17th place in a time of 41m 55s. He was
followed only around a minute later by Robin Guy who has had a good season
and finished 22nd in 42m 57s. Two good performances in a field of this
size.
Noel Hogan was also in good form on the day, keeping well up the placings
with a time of 45m 30s to give him 43rd place and Gary Postins was not too
far behind in 47m 42s and 75th place.
Recent new member to the club, Ian Atkinson, enjoyed his first attempt at
the event, finishing 92nd in 48m 24s and Sandy Mackenzie worked his way
steadily through the field in the last mile or two to complete the course
in 49m 16s and gain 102nd position.
Mark Deighton was progressing quite well until he tripped on a steep
descent and went headlong, injuring his foot, knee and elbow. This slowed
him down a bit, but he managed to complete the event in 139th place in 50m
39s.
John Brown did well in his age group to come in 365th in 59m 53s and Ceri
Christie completed the club line up, finishing 454th in 64m 35s.
